Selects Go 2-2 at AAU
Orlando, Florida

Saturday, January 28, 2012

The Kitchener Selects went 2-2 in their first ever appearance on American soil at the 2012 AAU Men's International Fastpitch Tournament, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

In their first round robin game, the Selects downed AOZ of Oklahoma, 2-1, behind a 16-strikeout performance from Doug Hoffman, who allowed just one unearned run. Jeremy DeLeeuw scored the eventual game-winner on a Mike Brown single. They then fell to the Lanzeros of Venezuela, 10-0, with Marvin Smith taking a tough loss before a strong relief performance from Mike Pullin. In their final round robin game, the Selects met the 2-0 Desert Kings of Mexico. Hoffman pitched another gem, striking out 14 and this time provided the heroics with his bat as well. Down 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, he laced a walk-off double to right-centre, scoring Craig Sarson and Sean Fitzgibbon for an exciting 3-2 win.

Despite finishing 2-1, the Selects' finished third in their pool due to their plus/minus, drawing an elimination round match-up with the Brewers of Venezuela. Doug Hoffman again got the ball, carrying a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, the Brewers rallied with a one-out, two-run triple and, after a pair of intentional walks, a sacrifice fly to right field to secure a 6-5 win, breaking the Selects' hearts and ending their tourney.

Thanks to Herb Beckman, Pete Chambers, Jeremy DeLeeuw, Sean Fitzgibbon, Rick Hames, Mike Pullin, Craig Sarson, Marvin Smith, and Brandon Viol for donning Selects' green for the tourney.

Kitchener Selects Get Early Start On 2012
Players head south for AAUs in Florida

Friday, January 13, 2012

For the first time in their history, the Kitchener Selects are heading south of the border - very, very south. Though only five of the team's regular players are able to juggle the demands of work, school, and family to make the pilgrimmage to Lake Buena Vista, Florida (just southwest of Orlando), Selects' green will be making its inaugural appearance at the 2012 AAU Men's International Fastpitch Tournament, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex from January 26-29.

Mike Brown, Glen Hall, Doug Hoffman, Kevin Ryrie, and Mike Welton will make the trip, with a roster rounded out with friends and fellow fastball junkies from the KFL, Golden Horseshoe Fastball League, and Tri-County Men's Fastball League. They open the 48-team tournament, which includes nine Canadian squads, against AOZ of Oklahoma on Thursday the 26th. The Selects then round out divisional play against the Lanzeros of Venezuela and Desert Kings of Mexico on Friday the 27th, at which point they'll be seeded for the elimination round.

Upon their return from Florida, the Selects will begin practicing in earnest for their upcoming season and their ongoing quest for the elusive KFL crown. Stay tuned for more!

Selects Swept By Classics

Selects vs. Classics
Wednesday, September 28, 2011

It wasn't the finish the Selects envisioned to an otherwise strong season. Already leading the KFL Finals 2-0, the veteran Classics went right for the Selects' jugular in search of their second straight league title and dealt the fatal blow with a 12-2 offensive onslaught, compounded by defensive errors from the boys in green.

After the Classics put together a five-run first inning, the Selects got one back in the top of the second when Dan Fogal scored on a Dan Clark fielder's choice, but the Classics answered with a four-run third inning that cemented their dominance all series. The Selects' final run of the season would come in the top of the fifth, when Tim Coverdale capped an impressive first season with the team, ripping an RBI triple to the right-centre gap, cashing Jamie Hickling, who drew three walks on the evening.

With the season now complete, the Selects would like to formally thank their friends, family, and fans for their support throughout the 2011 season, particularly those who were instrumental in helping the boys host the recent Ontario Challenge Cup. See you next year.
