Selects End Season As KFL Runner-Ups
The Selects' season came to an end Wednesday night with a 5-0 defeat to end the most successful season in Kitchener Selects history.
It was unfortunately a familiar story of the playoffs Wednesday night as the bats once again fell silent, ending the Selects thoughts of hoisting the KFL championship trophy.
Mike Brown and Kevin Ryrie collected the lone hits for the Selects, Brown reaching twice on singles and Ryrie once.
Though five runs were allowed Doug Hoffman threw a gem, allowing the Selects opportunities to climb back into the game. Unfortunately when they knocked on the door the Classics simply slammed it closed.
A great season for the Selects falls just short of the ultimate goal. Fortunately, there's always next year!

Selects Bounce Back With Game 3 Win
As happened often during the regular season, the Selects bats jumped ahead early with three runs in the first inning spotting them a three run cushion from the start which is all they would end up needing in a 4-2 victory.
Mike Brown singled off Classics' starter Bob Underwood to start the game. He advanced to second on a stolen base, to third on a Kevin Ryrie single and later scored when Jamie Hickling flied out to left field. Dan Clark followed that up with a signle, scoring Ryrie from third and Clark would score one batter later on a triple by Reed Laughlin.
After three straight scoreless innings, the Classics made it a ballgame in the fifth scoring two runs to narrow the Selects' lead to one.
With the gap narrowed, Jamie Hickling came through like he's been doing all playoffs long, singling in the sixth to start a one-run rally put the Selects up for good.

Ugly Loss Puts Selects In Big Hole
Having lost game one of the series the Selects were looking to climb out of the one-game deficit on Wednesday night as they once again faced the veteran Classics. Unfortunately for the Selects, a slow start offensively and a strong start by the Classics led to a tough to swallow 11-0 loss.
The lone bright spot on the night was Jamie Hickling managing to go two-for-two with a walk and the team's only RBI.
The Selects will look to bounce back next week in game three.
MVP: Jamie Hickling |
Bats Fall Silent in 3-0 Loss
Though Doug Hoffman and the Selects' defence was able to hold the Classics to just three runs in game one of the KFL finals, the Selects offense fell off as they managed just three hits in the 3-0 loss.
Mike Brown, Jamie Hickling and Dan Fogal accounted for the Selects only three hits in the game. Hoffman spun seven strong innings allowing just the three runs and striking out ten.
MVP: Kevin Ryrie |
Selects Heading to the Finals
It was a classic Selects-Smoke game once again in a game that took an extras to decide.
Doug Hoffman and Kevin Pomfret locked horns and through five innings had allowed just five base runners each. The Selects threatened in the top of the 7th as they had runners on first and second with just one out but couldn't come up with the key hit as they struck out twice to end the inning.
After holding the Smoke scoreless in the bottom of the seventh the Selects entered the eighth with Dan Fogal standing on second base. After a strikeout to start the inning Mike Brown singled for his third hit of the game scoring Fogal from second.
Mike Welton then stepped to the plate and layed down a perfect sacrafice bunt moving Brown over to second and setting up Kevin Ryrie's RBI single making it 2-0.
The second run proved extremely important as Tim Barfoot scorched a line drive to left field in the bottom of the eighth scoring Dwight Zinger from second making it 2-1 and leaving a runner on second with none out.
A groundout and a strikeout later saw Barfoot standing on third with two out and Chad Hallstead at the dish. Hallstead hit a soft grounder to shortstop Ryrie to end the game and send the Selects to their first KFL finals.

Selects Down Familiar Foe In Game 1
For the fourth straight season the Selects have reached the KFL semi-finals and have once again come up against a very familiar opponent in the Smoke. Game one of the series went Tuesday night and the teams supplied the usual drama that has become accustom to the Selects-Smoke meetings.
The Selects struck first in this tilt, as Mike Brown got the ball rolling in the first with a lead-off walk. Kevin Ryrie followed that up with a one-out single and Jamie Hickling continued his hot bat with an RBI single cashing Ryrie.
The Smoke replied in the fourth with a single, a reached on error and a two-run triple, all coming with two out.
Fortunately for the Selects they quickly jumped back on the Smoke, Hickling scoring the go-ahead and ultimately winning run in the bottom of the fourth. Riding the arm of Doug Hoffman through the rest of the game, the Selects took game one 3-2.
MVP: Jamie Hickling |
Selects Take Do Or Die
It was do or die for the Selects in game three of the best of three series on Thursday night with the winner moving on to the semi-finals and the loser's season coming to an end.
Fortunately for the Selects, the strong start continued to be an important aspect of the series as they scored all five of their runs in the first two innings and rode Doug Hoffman's no-hitter to a 5-0 victory and a 2-1 series win.
Hoffman struck out 12 over seven strong innings while allowing just two base runners - a walk in the third and an error in the seventh.
Centre fielder Mike Brown led the Selects with the bat going three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored while Jamie Hickling put in his best effort of the playoffs scoring once while picking up three RBI on the night.
The Selects now await their opponent for the semi-finals, whether it be the Smoke or the Classics.
MVP: Doug Hoffman |
A Game to forget...
It was a night to forget for the Selects from the very start Tuesday night. They surrendered eight runs in the first inning on the way to a 13-3 loss in game two of the best of three series.
Kevin Ryrie led the Selects' offensive strike with a two-for-three night as one of the only bright spots in the Selects lineup.
Fortunately for the Selects it's a best of three series and they have one more shot at redemption on Thursday night.
MVP: Kevin Ryrie |
Runs Come Early & Often in Game 1
A rematch of last year's KFL semi-final, the Selects meet the Diamond Jaxx in the first round of the 2010 KFL playoffs. Thursday night was game one of the series as Doug Hoffman faced off against Kevin Clugston.
Unfortunately for Clugston and the Jaxx, the Selects' bats came to life right away as they batted around in the first inning scoring five runs on two walks and four hits including a three-run triple from Dan Clark.
Shortstop Kevin Ryrie was keyed in at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Doug Hoffman threw seven strong innings allowing just three runs while striking out ten.
MVP: Doug Hoffman |
Selects Drop Regular Season Finale
Looking to ride their momentum through the Reds and into the playoffs the Selects were looking for a victory to not only end the regular season on a high note but also to lock up second place overall. Unfortunately the bats fell silent and the Selects couldn't muster up any kind of offense against left handed hurler Kevin Buckley.
Glen Hall singled twice in the game for the Selects accounting for nearly half of the Selects total hits.
Dan Fogal and Zack Anstett successfully reached on pinch hit singles in the sixth inning - Fogal scoring on Zack's drive through the left side - as the Selects attempted to make a push. Unfortunately the inning would end shortly after that and the Selects would fall 6-1.
MVP: Glen Hall |
Bats overpower Moonshiners
Another strong showing by the Selects offense once again powered them to an 11-1 victory over the shorthanded Moonshiners in their second and final meeting of the season.
It was a much different lineup for the Selects, with Mike Brown who went two-for-two with a pair of walks, two runs scored and two RBI batting in the eight hole and Scott Clark leading off going three-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored.
Trevor Botting, Zack Anstett, Kevin Ryrie and Reed Laughlin all added RBI's and the Selects went on to the 11-1 victory.
MVP: Mike Welton |
Anstett, Laughlin Lead Selects' Bats
A strong game from the Selects' bats helped power them to a 7-2 win over the Wizards on Thursday night.
Zack Anstett went two-for-two with a walk and two runs scored as he paced the Selects offense. Reed Laughlin added two hits and a walk of his own as he scored a run and knocked in one as well.
It was a balanced offensive attack for the Selects as six different players scored seven of the runs with the bottom of the order contributing the majority.
Scott Clark allowed just two runs on the night including a towering two-run bomb to Dwayne Oberle in the first but would settle in after that, striking out 11 on the way to the victory.
MVP: Scott Clark |
Hoffman No-Hits Kings
A bit of a pitcher's duel broke out on Monday night as Doug Hoffman and Nick Laurette locked horns. The Selects though, would break through and come out on top 3-0.
While Laurette had a nice game, Hoffman was the star throwing a no-hitter just one walk shy of the perfect game while striking out 13.
Glen Hall went two for three in the game scoring the first Selects' run on a Reed Laughlin double in the second inning.
The Selects were then held quiet until the sixth when they scored two more when Mike Welton scored on a past ball after his triple and Dan Fogal scored on a Doug Hoffman ground-out after he drew a pinch hit walk.
MVP: Doug Hoffman |
Young Selects Take Down Shiners
The young Selects looked even younger on Tuesday night as they took down the Moonshiners 9-2 for their first of two meetings this season.
It wasn't the prettiest game defensively for the Selects as a handful of errors cost them a few base runners and both runs scored.
All of the Selects runs were captured in the second and third innings, led by Dan Fogal and Mike Brown who each had two hits and were in on six of the Selects nine runs.
Scott Clark threw six strong innings for the Selects striking out nine and allowing just one hit in the game.
MVP: Mike Brown |
Late Rally Drops Selects
On a night where the Selects certainly played well enough to win, a few judgement calls late in the game sealed their fate and made a 2-2 tie very tough to swallow.
After reaching on an error for the first time this season, and making his way to third base on a couple of past balls, Mike Brown scored the first run of the game on a Brent Furtney ground ball to the third baseman.
The Diamond Jaxx responded in the second to even things up at one. It then became a bit of a pitchers duel as Doug Hoffman and Kevin Clugston were able to shut down the bats until Selects' pinch hitter Dan Fogal drove a ball into right field cashing the go ahead run in the 5th.
It remained that way until the seventh when the Selects were once again knocking on the door. With Kevin Ryrie standing on third base, a fly ball to the right fielder, off the Bat of Brent Furtney, had Ryrie thinking insurance run. Kevin's head-first dive appeared to have beat the trow but on appeal it was ruled he missed the plate thus keeping the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning, a call at the plate went the other way as a single through the hole on the right side got to Reed Laughlin who fired the ball home. A sweeping tag by Ryrie at the plate appeared to have caught the baserunner on the leg, however it was ruled he missed the tag and the Jaxx run tied the game.
A tough end to a well played ball game.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman |
Selects Squeak Out Win
Even though it was a much different Bell Cartage team than the one they saw just two weeks earlier, the Selects kept it close, carrying a 4-4 tie into the sixth inning where Bell would rally to score the fifth and deciding run.
The Selects scored the first three runs of the game, all coming in the first inning as Mike Brown, Brad Cleasby and Kevin Rryie cashed.
After plating just one run in response for the first three innings, Bell came out swinging in the fourth with a three-run effort to put them ahead 4-3.
The top of the order for the Selects went back to work in the fifth playing a little small ball to cash Mike Brown and tie the game. Unfortunately green and black, Bell would add another in the bottom of five putting them up for good.
MVP: Kevin Ryrie |
Hoffman Leads Selects
Doug Hoffman was the story of the night in the Selects 14-0 win over the short-handed Bell Cartage.
Hoffman lead the way for the Selects going 2 for 3 at the plate including a monstrous home run in the top of the fifth. Hoffman lead the Selects with more than just the bat though as he threw five shutout innings while picking up eight strikeouts in the process.
Next up, the Selects will look to put an end to the winning streak of the surprise Cardinals, who after dropping their first two of the season have rebounded with eight straight victories.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman |

First Innings Are Becoming Favourite
The Selects scored early and often in the 10-0 win after another scorching start saw them put up seven runs in the first frame against the young Wizards team.
The Selects carried the lead into the second where they would add another making it 8-0 after two.
Rod Fevreau kept the Wizards bats at bay throwing a three-hit shutout while striking out six over his five innings of work.
Reed Laughlin continued to light things up at the plate as he went 2-3 with a walk, a run scored and he also gathered his 14th RBI of the season, just one shy of the Selects single season record currently held by Glen Hall[15].
Zack Anstett and newcomer Mike Welton also had good nights at the plate, both collecting two hits and two runs scored while Mike also cashed one of the seven runs in the first.
Game MVP: Rod Fevreau |
I Guess We'll Take That...
This game was over before it began. A 7-0 win in the books and yet not a pitch was thrown as the Classics were short a few guys and were not able to field a team on Monday night handing the Selects the default victory.

Big First Lifts Selects Past Smoke
After allowing a run in the top of the first the Selects quickly trailed 1-0 in a tilt with the long-time rival Smoke. However, the deficit would not last long as the Selects exploded for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first.
Mike Brown and Reed Laughlin, the main contributors on this night each had two hits in the first, they each scored a run and had a combined five RBI in the first inning alone.
With a commanding 8-1 lead in place, the Selects turned to Doug Hoffman to shut the door. Hoffman allowed just one run on two hits the rest of the way.
The Selects added four insurance runs in the 5th and, riding the arm of Hoffman, would cruise to the 12-2 victory.
Game MVP: Mike Brown |
Bats Quiet In 4-2 Loss
It was a meeting of two the first place teams as the Selects met the Black Sox for their only meeting of the regular season. Unfortunately for the Selects, it didn't quite go to plan.
Though they managed six hits over six innings against Black Sox hurler Marc Geddes the Selects would capitalize just twice with runners on base, leading to the 4-2 loss.
Brent Furtney and Doug Hoffman highlighted the stat sheet for the Selects. Furtney went one for 2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI single while Hoffman, who cashed the Selects only other run, threw six innings of six-hit ball while striking out nine.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman |
Selects Bounce Back With Comeback Win
Once again the Selects found themselves trailing early on Thursday night as they attempted to bounce back from their first loss of the season.
The Kings scored two runs in the second and added another in the fourth putting the Selects down 3-0 with four innings in the books.
That's when the Selects responded. After Doug Hoffman led off the fifth inning with a walk, Brent Furtney singled moving pinch runner Scott Clark to third. Brad Cleasby, Dan Clark and Kevin Ryrie would all reach base, knocking in four runs and putting the Selects up 4-3.
After shutting down the Kings offence in the sixth the Selects bats went back to work. Hoffman drew a one out walk to once again get things started and the bats did the rest scoring four in the frame and putting the Selects on top 8-3 for the comeback win.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman |
Selects Drop First of Season
The Selects got down early and apart from one inning, had trouble solving Kevin Buckley as the Reds handed the Selects their first loss of the season, a 7-3 decision, on Wednesday night.
The Reds got up early scoring four runs in the first two innings. The Selects responded in the third with four straight singles from Mike Brown, Kevin Ryrie, Reed Laughlin and Jamie Hickling, scoring three runs and putting the Selects back in the game.
Unfortunately that's the closest the Selects would get as Buckley shut the door allowing just one more hit, a lead-off triple to Brad Cleasby in the fourth inning, that would stay stranded at third.
The Reds added three insurance runs, one in the fourth and another two in the fifth, to ultimately seal the deal on the 7-3 Selects loss.
Game MVP: Reed Laughlin |
Laughlin Leads Bats, Selects Over Bulldogs
It was a career night for Reed Laughlin as he equaled his RBI total from 2008 with two swings on Thursday night. Laughlin went 3 for 3 with a single, a two-run home run and a grand slam putting up six RBI and three runs scored.
Laughlin though, wasn't the only Select who had the bat working for him on this night; Brad Cleasby went 2-4 reaching base on all four plate appearences, due to Bulldogs errors, picking up two RBI and three runs scored. Kevin Ryrie also had a good night at the plate going 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Doug Hoffman threw five strong in the win striking out nine and allowing just four base-runners.
Game MVP: Reed Laughlin |
Selects' Bats Strong In Victory Over Barons
The bats kept rolling Monday night with a 10-1 victory over the Barons.
After a quick 1-2-3 first inning, the middle of the order went to work in the second scoring three runs and jumping out to a 3-1 lead.
The Selects took control of the game in the third making 13 trips to the plate, scoring seven runs on nine hits to take a 10-1 lead.
Brent Furtney was the star of the game for the Selects as he made his first pitching appearance of the 2010 season, shutting out the Barons in his two innings of work while going 2 for 2 at the plate with a run driven in.
Game MVP: Jamie Hickling

Fevreau, Laughlin Power Selects to 2-0 Start
Two first inning runs would prove to be all the Selects would need on Thursday night as Rod Fevreau led the way to a 3-1 victory over the Cardinals.
Mike Brown got things going in the first with a walk. He moved to second on a Brad Cleasby and after advancing to third on a passed ball, he would come around to score on a pitch in the dirt that got by Cardinals catcher Matthews.
The Cardinals got one back in the second but could get nothing else going against the veteran hurler who settled in and allowed just the one run over his six innings before handing it off to Scott Clark to close it out.
Reed Laughlin provided some insurance in the sixth inning notching his first home-run of the season - a monstrous shot over the scoreboard in left field - to put the Selects up 3-1 and to help solidify the win.

Selects Get Things Started On High Note
The Selects pitching staff was the story of the game as Scott Clark and Doug Hoffman combined for just one hit over six innings on route to an 11-1 victory over the Predators in the 2010 season opener.
Clark went four strong allowing just three base-runners over four innings while Hoffman kept the bases clear and struck out three in his two innings of work.
The Selects' 11 runs came on a balanced attack, headlined by Dan Clark and his three RBI and Glen Hall's two runs scored. Clark came through with a two-run single with two out in the bottom of the first to get the ball rolling and the Selects would not look back. A five-run third and four more in the sixth gave the Selects the 11-1 victory to help open the season on the right foot.
Game MVP: Glen Hall
