Selects Rally for First Win

Selects vs. Kings

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

The Selects put up five unanswered in the final frame to notch their first victory of the season, 6-5 over the Kings.

The Kings jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as walks to Nick Lichti and Dave Barraclough came around to score on a Greg Hammell single and Nick Laurette groundout. It would mark the only scoring in the first four innings.

The Selects cut the lead in half in the fifth when Tyler Sager reached on an error, stole second, and eventually scored on a Lane Sebastian sacrifice fly. The Kings answered right back, however, putting up three runs on four hits and two walks to extend their lead to 5-1. With the bases still loaded, Brett Pfeifer induced a grounder to short and Scott Clark stepped on the bag and fired to first for an inning-ending double play, which seemed to swing momentum.

After Kevin Ryrie singled and Brad Cleasby reached on an error, Darren Strickland ripped an RBI single and Pfeifer followed with a two-run single, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Dan Clark continued the parade of singles and then pinch-runner Tom Allan scored on a misplayed grounder off the bat of Sager to knot things at five. With two outs, Mike Brown delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, plating Clark to give the Selects the 6-5 edge. Hungry for more, Sager was thrown out attempting to steal home, but injured himself on the play.

With the Selects' bench emptied and three outs still to get, Sager gutted out an inning in unfamiliar surroundings at first base, as the Selects shuffled seven of their nine position players and Scott Clark nailed down the save with a 1-2-3 inning.

MVP: Darren Strickland, 1B/RF
