Ty Sebastian named to junior men's national team
Tuesday, August 28, 2025
The Kitchener Selects would like to congratulate Ty Sebastian on being named to the 2012 Canadian Junior Men's National Team, which will travel to Argentina for the Junior Men's World Championship in November.
In his first season as a Select, Sebastian appeared in seven games, hitting 0.500 with two home runs, seven RBIs, six runs scored, and two stolen bases. In 11 innings on the mound, he went 1-0 with a 3.82 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
As a member of the Wiarton Red Devils, Sebastian hit 0.385 at the Junior Canadian Championships in Owen Sound earlier this month and was named the tournament's all star second baseman. At only 19 years of age, he still has two years of eligibility at the junior level and we're confident that many more honours await him in a very promising fastball career.
Deja vu devastation: Jays sweep Selects
Selects vs. Jays
Thursday, August 23, 2025
The script was unchanged for game two of the Selects-Jays quarterfinal series, with the Selects taking a two-run lead into the final inning only to be disappointed by a three-run rally from the favoured Jays.
The game's starting pitchers again held the offenses in check through the first two innings before the Jays opened the scoring in the top of the third. Chad Annis hit a leadoff single and Jeff Laythorpe laid down a bunt. Selects hurler Chad Fink jumped on the ball and tried to get Annis at second, but he was ruled safe. Justin Krulicki then hit a towering fly ball to left, but Brad Dowling made the catch and fired a strike to third to nail Annis trying to advance. With two outs, Justin Clayfield replicated his game one game-winner, bouncing one up the middle to score Laythorpe and give the Jays a 1-0 lead. The Selects answered in the bottom half of the inning, however, as Kevin Ryrie stroked a two-out double and Jamie Ridley delivered a clutch RBI single to knot the game at one apiece.
After a scoreless fourth, the Selects went back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Brown poked a leadoff single and Ryrie followed with one of his own. Ridley then notched another RBI single, cashing Brown, and Mike Welton singled up the middle to score Ryrie, giving the Selects a 3-1 lead and putting them three outs away from evening the series. Alas, in the 2012 Selects season, nothing has seemed quite that simple.
Clayfield bounced a ground-rule double over the fence in right-centre to lead off the top of the sixth and Jeff Kolb drew a walk. After an Al Taylor pop out, Kevin Matthews also worked a walk to load the bases with one out. Tim Bartram then delivered the decisive blow with a bases-clearing double to right. Shayne Reipert, on in relief, got the Selects in order to preserve the 4-3 win and end the Selects season.
Chad Fink threw a great game in the loss, allowing just four hits over six innings and getting some spectacular defense behind him. In addition to the aforementioned Dowling double play, Zack Anstett made a shoestring grab at a full sprint in left, Brown made a sliding stab in the left-centre gap, and Ridley pounced on a ball that ricocheted off of Fink for the unconventional 1-5-3 putout. All in all, it was a great series and we wish the Jays all the best in their quest for the KFL crown.
As always, the Selects would like to thank their friends, family, and fans for their support throughout the year. Though the early exit still stings right now, we'll be back and as hungry as ever in 2013. See you then.

Selects lose heartbreaker in game one, 6-5
Selects vs. Jays
Tuesday, August 21, 2025
After waiting nearly two weeks to find out they were in the playoffs, the Selects opened their quarterfinal series against the Jays on Tuesday night and the game proved to be worth the wait.
After Scott Clark and Shayne Riepert held the offenses scoreless through two innings, the Selects drew first blood in the top of the third, when Kevin Ryrie drew a walk, stole second, and scored on a Jamie Ridley single. The lead proved short-lived, however, as the Jays knotted the game in the bottom half of the inning, when Justin Krulicki doubled and scored on a Chad Annis single. They grabbed the lead in the fourth when Kevin Matthews walked and scored on a Justin Clayfield single; after advancing on a passed ball, Clayfield then came in to count on a Krulicki single to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.
The Selects were not going to go quietly, though. With one out in the top of the fifth, Jamie Ridley drew a walk and Mike Brown singled. Both advanced on a passed ball, setting up Mike Welton's two-run single to tie the game. With two outs and Welton on third, Brent Furtney eventually bested Riepert in a long battle, stroking a single to LF to give the Selects a 4-3 lead. But they weren't done yet. After walks to Zack Anstett and Clark to load the bases, Ryrie drew an RBI walk to make it 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth and final inning.
Alas, the Jays proved they had a little resilience of their own. Jeff Kolb singled, Al Taylor walked, and Tim Bartram singled to load the bases with nobody out. Matthews singled past a drawn-in infield, scoring Kolb and Riepert (pinch-running for Taylor) to tie the game and move the winning run to third. After an intentional walk was issued to Jeff Laythorpe, Clayfield singled up the middle to cash Bartram with the winning run.
Game two of the series goes Thursday at 9 p.m. The Selects need a win to keep their season alive.

Selects blank Phillies in season finale
Selects vs. Phillies
Tuesday, August 7, 2025
Scott Clark picked a good night to have a dominant performance, throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout on Tuesday night as the Selects downed the Phillies 4-0 in a must-win season finale. Clark struck out five to pick up his fifth win of the season, getting good defense that included a Tim Coverdale outfield assist and a timely Jamie Ridley double play.
The Selects took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Dan Clark and Scott Clark both scored on a Kevin Ryrie double. They added a run in the fourth when Mike Welton tripled and scored on a Mike Brown groundout, and tacked on the game's final run in the sixth when Coverdale hit a rope to centre that bounced by the fielder, allowing him to come all the way around to score. Ryrie continued his scorching stick, going 2-3, while Dan Clark hit 2-2 and Welton was also 2-3.
With the win, the Selects finish the year at 8-11 and await news of their postseason fate.

Jays down Selects 7-0
Selects vs. Jays
Thursday, August 2, 2025
The Jays scored two in the top of the first, three in the third, and two more in the fourth to hand the Selects a 7-0 loss Thursday night, despite solid games from Kevin Ryrie (3-3, 2B, SB), Jamie Ridley (1-2, BB, SB), and Dan Clark (2-3).
With the loss, the Selects fall to 7-11 with only one game remaining, Tuesday at 7 against the Phillies, and they'll need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Kings edge Selects 5-4
Selects vs. Kings
Tuesday, July 31, 2025
The Selects lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to the Kings Tuesday night to drop to 7-10 on the season.
After two scoreless innings, Kevin Ryrie got the Selects started in the top of the third when he singled, advanced to third on a throwing error, and pulled the rarely-seen delayed steal of home to give the Selects a 1-0 lead. They pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Mike Brown hit a leadoff single, stole second, and came in to score on a passed ball. The Kings, however, answered in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Falk and Kevin Bisch led off with back-to-back singles and a throwing error from Brown allowed the Falk to score. Bisch then came in on an Anthony Medley single to knot the game at two.
The Selects came right back in the top of the fifth, regaining the lead when Brown hit a two-out single to cash Ryrie and Mark Cameron, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch and error, respectively. The 4-2 lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the fifth, Matt McLaren doubled and scored on a Falk single and, with two outs, Fred Follings hit a rocket to centre that Brown couldn't handle, allowing Falk to score the tying run. After Follings shut down the Selects in the top of the sixth, the Kings won the game in walkoff fashion, with Aaron Correia singling past a drawn-in infield to plate the winning run.
The Selects now look to move into a tie for the Black Division's final playoff spot with a 7 p.m. match-up against a very tough Jays squad on Thursday.

Selects end losing skid
Selects vs. Barons
Wednesday, July 25, 2025
The Selects ended a woeful six-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 5-0 win over the Barons, thanks in large part to a masterful pitching performance from Chad Fink. The first-year Select delivered a complete game two-hit shutout, striking out 14 along the way - and reached base safely in all three of his plate appearances for good measure.
The boys in green took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Scott Clark walked, stole second, and came in to score on a Dan Clark groundout. In the bottom of the third, Mike Brown took home on a passed ball after notching a leadoff single and Dan Fogal cashed one of Kevin Ryrie's three singles on the day, making it 3-0 Selects. They added the final two runs in the sixth, when walks to Fink and Dan Clark came in to count on a Brown groundout and Brad Cleasby single, respectively.
The Selects will look to build on the win this weekend as they defend their title at the 41st Annual Brussels Invitational. They resume their KFL schedule next week with games against the Red Division's top two teams, the Kings on Tuesday at 9 and the Jays on Thursday at 7.

Shorthanded Selects Fall
6-0 to Diamond Jaxx
Selects vs. Diamond Jaxx
Monday, July 23, 2025
Playing with only eight guys Monday night, the Selects were shorthanded and in tough against the first-place Diamond Jaxx.
Though knocking on the door to start the game - with Kevin Ryrie and Brad Cleasby both reaching base in their first two at bats - the Selects couldn't come through with timely hitting, stranding them both times at second and third.
Despite their offensive struggles, the Selects kept the game close, taking a 3-0 game into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, that's when the wheels fell off, as the Jaxx collected four hits in the sixth leading to three more runs and the 6-0 win.
The Selects look to right the ship on Wednesday as they take on the Barons at 9:00.

Selects continue to slump
Selects vs. Moonshiners
Tuesday, July 17, 2025
The Selects fell to the Moonshiners 8-4 Tuesday night, marking their fifth consecutive loss. The Moonshiners posted three unearned runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Selects' sticks awoke. Dan Fogal stroked a single to lead off the bottom of the third, followed by Brad Dowling laying down a sacrifice bunt and reaching on an error. After a Kevin Ryrie bunt single to load the bases and a Brad Cleasby fielder's choice, Jamie Ridley stroked a bases-clearing triple and came in to score on an errant throw, giving the Selects a 4-3 lead. Alas, it would not last, as the Moonshiners put up a five-run fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish.
With the loss, the Selects fall to 6-8, which drops them into a tie for fifth in the KFL's Black Division. They'll look to move up in the standings next week with a pair of games against the division-leading Diamond Jaxx on Monday and the Barons on Wednesday.
MVP: Jamie Ridley, 2B
Selects fall to Preds
Selects vs. Predators
Monday, July 16, 2025
The Predators extended the Selects' losing streak to four games Monday night with a 6-1 loss that puts the boys in green below 0.500 for the first time since 2008. Mike Brown led off the game with an infield single, stole second, and came in to score on Tim Coverdale's RBI single to give the Selects an early 1-0 lead, but it would turn out to be their only offense on the night.
The Predators tied the game in the bottom of the second when Mark Kelly singled and scored on a passed ball and they took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning, which was keyed by a Kelly single and a Dan Mullin triple. Chad Fink suffered his first loss as a Select, despite striking out five in four innings of work.
The Selects now sit at 6-7 and will seek to stop the bleeding Tuesday night against the Moonshiners, who beat them 5-2 earlier this year.

Selects drop third in a row
Selects vs. Bulldogs
Thursday, July 12, 2025
The Selects lost in convincing fashion Thursday night, 12-1 to the Bulldogs in a game that was never close. The Bulldogs hit the ball well. The Selects did not. That's really all you need to know.
The Selects, now 6-6, are back in action with two games next week, Monday at 9 against the Predators and Tuesday at 7 against the Moonshiners.

Selects suffer second straight loss, 9-5 to Smoke
Selects vs. Smoke
Tuesday, July 10, 2025
For the first time this season, the Selects suffered back-to-back losses, falling 9-5 to their familiar foes, the Smoke. Kevin Pomfret notched 10 strikeouts in five innings of work for the Smoke, allowing three runs on five hits to get the win. The Selects offense was led by two-hit nights from Steve Gillis, Mike Welton, and Zack Anstett, with Gillis and Brad Cleasby each scoring two runs in the loss.
The Selects drop to 6-5 with the loss and look to rebound Thursday night at 7 against the Bulldogs.
MVP: Mike Welton, 2B
Jaxx win big over Selects
Selects vs. Diamond Jaxx
Thursday, July 5, 2025
The undefeated Diamond Jaxx scored early and often Thursday night, handing the Selects a 15-4 loss, while tacking on seven runs in the fifth thanks in part to some seeing-eye singles and defensive miscues from the boys in green. In his first start against his former team, Doug Hoffman allowed four runs (two earned) over five innings on five hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch, striking out six. Kevin Ryrie went 2-3 with two runs scored in the loss, while Scott Clark had a walk, stolen base, and two-run double in his only two plate appearances.
The Selects (6-4) are back in action with two games next week, Tuesday at 9 against the Smoke (7-6-1) and Thursday at 7 against the Bulldogs (4-8).

Selects drop Red Sox, 11-0
Selects vs. Red Sox
Tuesday, July 3, 2025
The Selects rode a 10-run fourth inning and a strong performance from Scott Clark to a 11-0 win over the Red Sox Tuesday night, a result that looked very much in doubt after two scoreless innings in which the Red Sox put three runners in scoring position to just one for the Selects. Clark kept his poise, however, notching some timely strikeouts in a five-inning shutout. Overall, he allowed just three hits and struck out nine en route to his fourth victory of the year.
Eventually, the Selects' offense awoke to continue putting up the big numbers that has typified it lately, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning before the aforementioned monstrous fourth. They were led by big games from Zack Anstett, who was 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Dan Clark, who went 2-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored; Mike Brown, who was 2-2 with an RBI and two runs; Scott Clark, who went 1-2 with a two-run homer and two runs scored; and Jamie Ridley, who stayed hot with a 2-3 night that included an RBI and a run scored.
The win moves the Selects into second place in the Black Division at 6-3, with a major test against the undefeated Diamond Jaxx (9-0) looming on Thursday at 9.

Selects impress with 11-1 win
Selects vs. Classics
Thursday, June 28, 2025
In their most impressive offensive outburst of the season, the Selects swept the season series from the veteran Classics Thursday night, winning 11-1. In his first start as a Select, Ty Sebastian allowed just one unearned run on five hits, sprinkling seven strikeouts over his six innings of work. Perhaps more impressively, he also paced the team's offense, going 3-4 with a double, four RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
Jamie Ridley also had a big night at the dish, going 3-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Other key contributors included Brad Cleasby, who went 2-3 with a stolen base, RBI, and run scored; Kevin Ryrie, who went 3-4 with three runs; and Reed Laughlin, who was 1-2 with a two-run double and a run scored.
With the win, the Selects improve to 5-3 on the year and sit third in the Black Division. They're back in action next week with a pair of 9:00 games against the Red Sox on Tuesday and the undefeated Diamond Jaxx on Thursday.

Selects lose tight one, 3-2
Selects vs. Puslinch Phillies
Wednesday, June 27, 2025
The Selects lost a heartbreaker Wednesday night, stranding nine runners - including six in scoring position - as they fell to the Phillies 3-2 in a key divisional match-up. J.J. Gallo opened the scoring for the Phillies in the bottom of the first, depositing the first pitch he saw just over the fence in left field for a 1-0 lead. The Selects were quick to answer, as Mike Brown singled and scored on an RBI double from Reed Laughlin with no outs in the top of the second. But Phillies pitcher Scott MacDonald recorded a pair of timely strikeouts - two of his nine on the day - and worked his way out of the jam.
The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Mallin hit a leadoff single and came in to count on a two-out RBI single from Bryce Allen. Again, the Selects answered, courtesy a pair of timely pinch hits in the top of the sixth. Chad Fink stroked a triple to right-centre and Jamie Ridley knocked him in with two outs to knot the game at two. Alas, it would not be enough. Cody Cummings singled and came in to score thanks to a fielder's choice and two passed balls, handing the Phillies a 3-2 lead. With two on and the Selects threatening in the top of the seventh, MacDonald did what he'd done all night, inducing a grounder to first for yet another timely out.
Reed Laughlin (2-3, 2B, RBI), Kevin Ryrie (2-2, BB, HBP, SB), and Tim Coverdale (2-3, BB, SB) all had good nights at the plate in a losing cause. Scott Clark took the loss, allowing three runs (one unearned) on six hits, while striking out one. With the loss, the Selects fall to 4-3 on the season and, weather permitting, are back in action tonight at 9 against the Classics.
MVP: Kevin Ryrie, SS/3B
Selects cruise to 12-1 win
Selects vs. Barons
Wednesday, June 20, 2025
The Selects rode a five-run first inning and a dominant pitching performance from Chad Fink to their fourth win of the season, dropping the Barons 12-1. In his first start as a Select, Fink allowed just one hit and one unearned run through five innings, striking out 10 along the way. He also had a 2-3 night at the dish, including an RBI double and two runs scored.
Other offensive standouts on the night included Tim Coverdale, who was a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Brad Dowling, who hit a two-run inside-the-park home run and added an RBI sacrifice fly; Reed Laughlin, who went 2-4 with a triple, a run scored, and 4 RBIs; and Brent Furtney, who went 1-2 with a walk, 2 RBIs, and a run scored.
Weather permitting, the Selects will be back in action tomorrow night at 9 p.m., looking to give the Diamond Jaxx (7-0) their first loss of the season.

Bell hands Selects 4-1 loss
Selects vs. Bell Cartage
Thursday, June 14, 2025
The Selects felt the sting of the long ball Thursday night in a 4-1 loss to Bell Cartage. Derek Martin opened the scoring for Bell in the bottom of the third with a two-out opposite field blast, but the Selects evened the score in the top of the fourth when Scott Clark's two-out single cashed Jamie Ridley, who had walked and moved into scoring position on a Jamie Hickling fielder's choice. Alas, it would be all the offense the Selects would muster on this night despite two-hit games from Brad Cleasby and Brent Furtney.
Bell took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Roach reached on an error and came into score on a Matt Stagg single before Tim Dubois hit a rocket over the centre field fence to give Bell a 4-1 lead. Mel Ross shut the door the rest of the way, allowing six hits while notching 12 strikeouts. Clark took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits, while striking out three.
With the loss, the Selects fall to 3-2. They're back in action next week against a pair of division rivals, the Barons (2-3) and Diamond Jaxx (6-0), on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Both games are at 9:00.
MVP: Jamie Ridley, 3B
Selects rebound with 10-3 comeback win
Selects vs. Predators
Thursday, June 7, 2025
The Selects tallied 10 unanswered runs to get back into the win column Thursday night, beating the Predators 10-3. The Predators drew first blood in the top of the first when Dan Mullin stroked an RBI double, cashing Matt Duggan. Thanks in part to six stranded Selects' runners in the first four innings, the score would stay that way until the top of the fifth, when RBI singles from Dan Gehl and Duggan made it 3-0.
The Selects finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, however, as Jamie Ridley laid down a bunt single, scoring Brad Cleasby and Brent Furtney on an errant throw. He then came in to tie the game on a Scott Clark fielder's choice and another Predators throwing error. The floodgates opened in a seven-run sixth inning, which included a two-run inside-the-park home run from Mike Brown and a two-run double by Clark, who paced the offense with a two hit, three RBI performance.
Clark also picked up his third complete game and third win of the season, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out nine.
MVP: Mike Brown, CF
Selects lose 5-2, fall to 2-1
Selects vs. Moonshiners
Thursday, May 31, 2025
The Selects dropped their first game of the season, falling to the Moonshiners 5-2 on Thursday night. The Selects opened the scoring in the top of the second on a two-out RBI double by Scott Clark, cashing Brent Furtney, but the Moonshiners answered in the bottom half when Scott Campbell knocked in Andrew Stewart, who had led off the inning with a triple.
While the Selects struggled to solve Moonshiners pitcher Derek Mitchell, the 'Shiners went right back to work in the bottom of the third, tacking on three more runs on four hits and an error to jump out to a 4-1 lead. The Selects trimmed it to 4-2 in the top of the fifth when Clark scored on Brad Dowling's RBI double, but that was as close as they would get. The Moonshiners added one more in the fifth and any hope of a Selects comeback was cut short when Mike Brown flied out to left with two on in the seventh to end the game.
In his third start of the year, Clark threw six innings, allowing 10 hits and a walk, while striking out six. The boys in green will look to get back into the win column against the Predators (3-3) next Thursday at 9.
MVP: Kevin Ryrie, 3B
Offense explodes in 10-0 win
Selects vs. Thunder
Thursday, May 24, 2025
The Selects moved to 2-0 with a lopsided 10-0 win over the Thunder, scoring early and often while pitchers Scott Clark and Chad Fink continued to hold opposing offenses scoreless in this young KFL season.
Clark threw three innings of no-hit ball, walking one and striking out one before handing the ball to Fink. In his three innings, Fink allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out five.
Meanwhile, Ty Sebastian made his presence felt in his KFL debut, going 4-4 with two home runs, a double, three RBIs, and four runs scored. Fink also went yard, while Brad Dowling went 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored in just his second game as a Select. Brad Cleasby didn't let the new faces have all the fun, going 3-3 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored.
The Selects will look to keep it rolling next Thursday at 7 against the Predators.

Selects win season opener
Selects vs. Classics
Thursday, May 17, 2026
The Selects opened their 2012 KFL campaign on a winning note, defeating the Classics 1-0 in the KFL's first televised game on Rogers TV (Cable 20). In a rematch of last year's championship series, the Selects exacted a small measure of revenge behind a tremendous performance from Scott Clark, who threw a complete game two-hitter while striking out six.
The Classics threatened in the top of the first when John Sexton drew a one-out walk and Brad Maunder reached on an error, moving Sexton to third. Clark, unfazed, induced a tapper back to the mound for the second out and then notched a timely strikeout to escape the jam. The Classics would manage just two baserunners the rest of the way - leadoff singles in the third and fourth innings before Clark retired 12 straight to secure the victory.
For a while, the Selects were similarly stymied on offense. In the bottom of the fourth, however, Kevin Ryrie hit a well placed leadoff double, moved to third on a fielder's choice by Chad Fink, and scored on a hard hit grounder by Tim Coverdale, which was misplayed by the Classics' shortstop. It wasn't a lot, but on this night, it was all Clark needed.
The Selects are in Woodstock this weekend and resume KFL action Thursday at 7 against the 1-1 Thunder.

Season Opener Less Than A Week Away
Friday, May 11, 2026
The Kitchener Selects are less than a week away from their 2012 KFL season opener, a rematch of the 2011 championship series against the Classics, with the boys in green seeking to exorcise some demons. The game will take place at Budd Park at 7:00 on Thursday, May 17 and will double as the Selects' television debut, on Rogers TV (Cable 20). For more information about the KFL's TV partnership with Rogers, check out the May 2 release at kitchenerfastballleague.ca.
The Selects would like to officially say goodbye (at least for now) to Glen Hall and Doug Hoffman, two of the players who have been synonymous with the Selects name for many years. Hoffman and the Selects have amicably parted ways and we wish him all the best with the Diamond Jaxx this year (except when they play the Selects, naturally). He has been an immense part of the team's success over the years. We're particularly sad to say goodbye to Hall, who was the only player that had been with the team for every year since its 1999 founding. He is taking a year away from ball for health reasons and his contributions on and off the field will be missed.
Though the 2012 roster hasn't yet been finalized, we'd like to welcome Chad Fink to the team. Fink is a teammate of Dan Clark and Brent Furtney with the Sebringville Sting, and he will help to pick up some of the pitching slack in Hoffman's absence. We're also excited to have Tim Coverdale on board for his first full season with the team after joining us part-way through 2011.
The Selects will be competing against the Barons, Classics, Diamond Jaxx, Moonshiners, Phillies, and Predators in the KFL's Black Division. For a preview, check out the May 9 release on the KFL site. For the Selects' full schedule, check out the link at the top of the newly-designed site.
Six of the team's regulars will also be in Millgrove this weekend, and the Selects have confirmed entry to tournaments in Woodstock (May 18-21) and Brussels (July 27-29). Check back regularly for the latest news and follow us on Twitter (@selectsfastball or twitter.com/selectsfastball, for the uninitiated).
Selects Go 2-2 at AAU
Orlando, Florida
Saturday, January 28, 2026
The Kitchener Selects went 2-2 in their first ever appearance on American soil at the 2012 AAU Men's International Fastpitch Tournament, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
In their first round robin game, the Selects downed AOZ of Oklahoma, 2-1, behind a 16-strikeout performance from Doug Hoffman, who allowed just one unearned run. Jeremy DeLeeuw scored the eventual game-winner on a Mike Brown single. They then fell to the Lanzeros of Venezuela, 10-0, with Marvin Smith taking a tough loss before a strong relief performance from Mike Pullin. In their final round robin game, the Selects met the 2-0 Desert Kings of Mexico. Hoffman pitched another gem, striking out 14 and this time provided the heroics with his bat as well. Down 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, he laced a walk-off double to right-centre, scoring Craig Sarson and Sean Fitzgibbon for an exciting 3-2 win.
Despite finishing 2-1, the Selects' finished third in their pool due to their plus/minus, drawing an elimination round match-up with the Brewers of Venezuela. Doug Hoffman again got the ball, carrying a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, the Brewers rallied with a one-out, two-run triple and, after a pair of intentional walks, a sacrifice fly to right field to secure a 6-5 win, breaking the Selects' hearts and ending their tourney.
Thanks to Herb Beckman, Pete Chambers, Jeremy DeLeeuw, Sean Fitzgibbon, Rick Hames, Mike Pullin, Craig Sarson, Marvin Smith, and Brandon Viol for donning Selects' green for the tourney.
Kitchener Selects Get Early Start On 2012
Players head south for AAUs in Florida
Friday, January 13, 2026
For the first time in their history, the Kitchener Selects are heading south of the border - very, very south. Though only five of the team's regular players are able to juggle the demands of work, school, and family to make the pilgrimmage to Lake Buena Vista, Florida (just southwest of Orlando), Selects' green will be making its inaugural appearance at the 2012 AAU Men's International Fastpitch Tournament, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex from January 26-29.
Mike Brown, Glen Hall, Doug Hoffman, Kevin Ryrie, and Mike Welton will make the trip, with a roster rounded out with friends and fellow fastball junkies from the KFL, Golden Horseshoe Fastball League, and Tri-County Men's Fastball League. They open the 48-team tournament, which includes nine Canadian squads, against AOZ of Oklahoma on Thursday the 26th. The Selects then round out divisional play against the Lanzeros of Venezuela and Desert Kings of Mexico on Friday the 27th, at which point they'll be seeded for the elimination round.
Upon their return from Florida, the Selects will begin practicing in earnest for their upcoming season and their ongoing quest for the elusive KFL crown. Stay tuned for more!
