Selects Season Comes To An End
Another successful Selects season is in the books and the elusive trip to the finals evaded them once more, as Mel Ross tossed a one-hitter and stroked two RBI singles to win 2-0 and send the Selects packing. Doug Hoffman again threw a gem, notching 10 strikeouts over a complete game five-hitter, but had no help from his offence. As the Selects look forward to next season, they'd like to congratulate the Classics on winning the 2008 KFL Championship series.

Bell Cartage Force Game 3
In yet another pitcher's duel, Bell Cartage edged the Selects 2-1 to force a deciding third game in what has been a thoroughly entertaining semi-final series. Doug Hoffman threw a complete game six-hitter, but Dan Martin managed a complete game four-hitter, while striking out 16. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4th, when Mike Brown singled and scored on a Glen Hall seeing-eye single. Not ready to call it a season quite yet, however, Bell Cartage came back on the strength of a two-out, two-run triple from Josh Brohman in the top of the 5th and that would prove to be enough. Game three goes this Wednesday at 9 p.m.

selects double up on bell cartage to take game one
Aggression was the name of the game for the Selects in their semi-final opener, as they doubled up on Bell Cartage 4-2 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series. Trevor Botting got the ball rolling in the 4th inning, drawing a walk and advancing to 2nd on a passed ball. Steve Hall followed with a hard single through the right side to cash Botting, and then came around to score from first on a single by Dan Clark, thanks to a well executed hit-and-run. Bell got one back in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a Tim Dubois RBI single, but the Selects came right back with two more in the 5th. Mike Brown and Kevin Ryrie hit back-to-back singles with two outs and came in to count on a pair of passed balls. Bell closed the gap to 4-2 in the 6th, but could get no closer. Doug Hoffman threw another great game, striking out 11 in the win.

selects defeat smoke in 8 innings
For the third year in a row, the Selects are guaranteed a top 4 finish - and it again took a thrilling quarterfinal series to assure it. In a tightly contested pitcher's duel between Doug Hoffman and the Smoke's Casey Halstead, the Selects pulled out a 1-0 win in eight innings. Hoffman was his usual brilliant self, striking out 12 in an eight-inning, four-hit shutout. On the flip side, Halstead K'ed 16 Selects and allowed just three hits. But after seven innings left a scoreless draw, it was the Selects that were able to draw the game's lone run. With Reed Laughlin on second base for the international tie-breaker, Dan Fogal laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to set up Kevin Ryrie's two-out heroics. Ryrie chopped one to the left side and dove safely into first base for the infield single and game-winning RBI. The Selects would like to tip their collective caps to the Smoke for yet another thrilling series, and now turn their attention to Bell Cartage for a semi-final series that begins Monday.
Game MVP: Kevin Ryrie, SS

Selects Let Game 2 Slip Through Fingers
Well, it just wouldn't be a Smoke-Selects playoff series without a deciding game 3. For three innings, the Selects played like a sweep was a very tangible reality. Doug Hoffman struck out 6 as he retired the first 11 batters he faced. In the bottom of the first, the Selects eeked out a run when Glen Hall reached on an error and Mike Brown, pinch-running, stole 2nd before coming in to count as Steve Hall forced a bad throw to 1st. 1-0 Selects. They added to the lead in the third inning with a one-out rally. After a single from Glen Hall and a double from Brown, Steve Hall dropped one over the head of the shortstop to score a pair. And then the wheels came off. With errors a plenty, the Selects let the Smoke back into the game, allowing 5 runs between the 5th and 7th innings for an eventual 6-3 defeat. The series shifts to a deciding game on Wednesday, where the Selects hope they can atone for their sins and win a series that slipped through their fingers in game 2.
Game MVP: Glen Hall, C

Laughling & Hoffman Lead Selects To Game 1 Victory
The Selects opened the playoffs against the Smoke for the second straight year and, also for the second year in a row, the underdog Selects won the series opener. Doug Hoffman was once again brilliant, striking out 11 and falling just one out shy of a no-hitter before Chad Halstead snuck a single between third and short. But with a little help from his defence, including another sparkling defensive effort from gutsy second-baseman Brad Cleasby, Hoffman's effort was more than enough for a 7-0 win. The Selects opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd when Hoffman notched a leadoff single and came in to count on Mike Kitchen's two-out RBI single. Then, in the top of the 4th, Dan Clark led off with a rocket to CF that saw him end up on third base. After Trevor Botting singled Clark home, he came in to score on Kevin Ryrie's RBI single, extending the lead to 3-0. The Selects then blew it open in the 6th. After a leadoff walk to Clark and another single from Botting, Reed Laughlin took the first pitch he saw over the CF fence for a pinch-hit three-run home run. To round out the scoring, Ryrie singled and came around to score on a Mike Brown fielder's choice.

Selects Season In Review
Despite a probable seventh place finish in this year's parity-driven KFL standings, this year marked the Selects' most successful regular season performance in the four years that team statistics exist for, narrowly eclipsing the 11-10-1 mark set in 2006 with a 12-10-0 season. As a team, the Selects also set season bests with a collective 0.270 batting average (up from 0.259 in 2005) and 92 runs scored (up from 82 last year). On a personal level, shortstop Kevin Ryrie had a breakout year, annihilating his previous personal bests and breaking some team records in the process: 74 plate appearances (edging Mike Brown's 69 in 2005), 26 hits (beating Glen Hall's 25 in 2005) and 21 runs scored (shattering Brown's mark of 14 in 2007). Ryrie also posted an impressive 0.419 batting average, with a 0.514 on-base percentage and 7 stolen bases. Four other Selects finished the season hitting above 0.300: Glen Hall at 0.305, Doug Hoffman at 0.308, Steve Hall at 0.364 and Brown at 0.397. In his first season as a Select, Zack Anstett was 7th on the team in hitting at 0.244 and went 2-0 as a pitcher.

Selects Drop Last Game of Season
The Selects simply couldn't make it four in a row to end the year, falling to the Kings 1-0 in a hard-fought regular season finale. Doug Hoffman pitched a gem, throwing a complete game two-hitter while striking out 13. To complete the pitcher's duel, the Kings' duo of Nick Laurette and Fred Follings combined for a two-hitter of their own, also striking out 13. Although the Selects threatened early, with Kevin Ryrie and Reed Laughlin in scoring position in the 1st and 3rd innings respectively, they could not muster a run. On the other side of the ball, the Kings delivered the game's only run in the top of the 6th when Fred Follings hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout to first base, and scored on a wild pitch. With the loss, the Selects finish the year 12-10 and look towards a probable playoff match-up, for the third year in a row, with their friendly rivals, the Smoke.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Selects Walk-off For 3-2 Win
There's just something fun about walk-off wins. That's what the Selects seem to have learned this year, as they picked up their 12th win of the season 3-2 over the Bulldogs, and their fourth in that dramatic fashion. The Bulldogs put up runs in the 1st and 4th innings to take a 2-0 lead before the Selects could muster any offence. Then, after Zack Anstett reached second on a throwing error, Reed Laughlin rapped a timely RBI single to right field to make it 2-1. The two-out rally continued, as Kevin Ryrie and Glen Hall both registered singles, with Hall's bringing Laughlin in to tie the game. It would remain knotted until the bottom of the 7th. After Ryrie drew a leadoff walk and stole 2nd, Hall singled. Mike Brown was then given an intentional walk to load the bases with nobody out and Andy McLean lofted a single over the infield to secure the win. Brad Cleasby played a gutsy game, gritting his teeth through the final couple innings with an empty bench after coming up lame on a run to first. The Selects have now won nine of their last 12, including three in a row, and finish their regular season Tuesday against the Kings.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Selects Explode For 10 Runs In Win over black sox
Doug Hoffman continued to pad his strikeout stats with another solid complete game win, whiffing 12 as the Selects downed the Black Sox 10-3. With the Black Sox regular pitchers missing in action, the Selects bats roared to life to put up 10 runs in the first four innings. Offensively, four Selects had multi-hit games. Kevin Ryrie was 2-4 with a pair of stolen bases and runs scored. Dan Fogal was 2-4 with an RBI and a run. Zack Anstett was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs. And Mike Brown was 3-4 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and four RBI. Brad Cleasby also had a solid game, reaching base twice (walk, hit by pitch) and making an amazing diving play at second base. The Selects are now 11-9 and have won 8 of their last 11. They try to make it three in a row on Thursday as they meet the Bulldogs.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Hoffman Strong In Win Over Classics
The Selects rode the arm of Doug Hoffman to a 5-1 win over the Classics, sweeping the season series 2-0 in the process. Hoffman threw a gem, striking out 12 over six innings while allowing just three hits and one unearned run. Meanwhile, the duo of Kevin Ryrie and Glen Hall ignited the offence. Ryrie was 2-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, scoring three runs and adding a stolen base. Glen Hall broke out with a 4-4 evening in his season debut batting in the second spot. Steve Hall and Dan Clark also put together efficient 2-3 evenings in the win. The Selects now turn their attention to Monday's meeting with the Black Sox, where they hope to avenge a 3-0 loss on June 26.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Put Up A fight, fAll to reds
The Reds suffered their first loss last week and the Selects looked to capitalize on that to climb a little higher above .500 but leaving 7 runners on base kept the Selects to scoring just one run to the Reds three. Doug Hoffman threw a very efficient game, working fast and keeping the Reds bats guessing, recording only 5 strikeouts but forcing the Reds into ground out situations and letting the Selects defense take care of business. The third inning saw Mike Kitchen smack a triple to the left field fence, and was followed by Brad Cleasby hammering a liner off the third baseman’s glove to collect the rbi. Multiple hit games from Trevor Botting and Kevin Ryrie helped put a few more runners on but the Selects failed to cross the plate any more in the game. Highlights include an mvp-worthy three for four game from Ryrie which included a perfectly-executed hit-and-run with Zack Anstett on base and a two-out bunt single in the top of the seventh.
Game MVP: Trevor Botting, 3B

making push to past .500 mark
The Selects moved above 0.500 for the first time all season with a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs, taking an early lead with three runs in the first inning. After Kevin Ryrie reached on an error and Mike Brown walked, Glen Hall notched a sacrifice fly, scoring Ryrie. Steve Hall also worked a walk before Doug Hoffman doubled him and Brown home. After the Bulldogs cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning, the Selects went back to work. Glen Hall walked and moved to second on Steve Hall's sacrifice bunt. Doug Hoffman then knocked him home and came into count himself after back-to-back singles from Trevor Botting and Dan Fogal, making it 5-1. Andy McLean then took over on the mound and allowed just two runs the rest of the way, securing the 5-3 win. Impressively, despite making four plate appearances, Steve Hall finished the game without an at-bat, drawing three walks to complement his sacrifice bunt.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Selects win nailbitter
The Selects reached the 0.500 mark once again with a nailbiting 3-2 win over the Kolts. Andy McLean pikced up the win in relief, striking out 3 in two innings of work, while starter Doug Hoffman struck out 13 in 5 innings, also going 2 for 2 offensively to attain game MVP honours. The Selects took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Mike Brown hit a leadoff double and Scott Clark singled him home. The Kolts came right back with a run of their own in the 2nd and it would remain tied until the 5th, when Brown scored from second on a Glen Hall strikeout and a passed ball. Ever resilient, however, the Kolts tied it in the 6th when Adam Teeple tripled and scored on a fly to left field. Not to be denied, the Selects would pick up their third walk-off win of the season in the bottom of the 7th. Brown walked and Clark advanced him with his second sac bunt of the game. After Steve Hall singled to move Brown to third, he came in to score on a passed ball to end the game.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Selects Drop below .500
If the Selects had any visions of moving above 0.500 for the first time all year, Casey Halstead and the Smoke were only too happy to eviscerate them, dropping the Selects 7-0 to sweep the season series. Halstead threw seven shutout innings, surrending only three hits while striking out 11. And though the Selects got a runner to 3rd three times, they could not cash. Meanwhile, the Smoke jumped to an early lead, putting up four runs in the first inning before adding one in the third and two more in the fifth to round out the offense.
Game MVP: Kevin Ryrie, SS

Selects win third straight
The second-half Selects are officially rolling. They won their third in a row and fourth in five games with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over the Predators, to reach the 0.500 mark at 7-7. The Selects took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when Mike Brown (running for Glen Hall) scored on a Dan Fogal double. The Predators then put up five unanswered runs between the 2nd and 4th innings to hold a 5-1 lead. But the Selects didn't falter. In the bottom of the 4th, Zack Anstett - who went 2 for 3 - scored on a Mike Brown single up the gut, and Kevin Ryrie came in on a Glen Hall fielder's choice. With one swing of the bat, Steve Hall tied the game with a two-run homer to CF, scoring Brown. The game remained deadlocked until the Selects' final at-bat, when Ryrie walked and stole second, scoring on a Glen Hall drive over the left fielder's head. The Selects look to move above 0.500 for the first time all season when they meet the Smoke on Tuesday.
Game MVP: Steve Hall, 1B

hoffman's return a beauty
The Selects creeped to within one game of .500 with a 6-1 over Bell Cartage. Doug Hoffman threw well in his first game in weeks, tossing a complete game four-hitter while striking out 12, but Bell Cartage still led 1-0 after four innings, thanks to a Wes Mortin RBI single scoring Andy Dixon. However, the Selects showed resilience, putting up three-run innings in the 5th and 7th. Scott Clark singled in Glen Hall to tie the game in the 5th, before Mike Brown singled home Clark and Kevin Ryrie scored on a Hoffman fielder's choice. Then, in the top of the 7th, a couple of errors allowed Glen Hall and Mike Kitchen to score before Steve Hall singled home Ryrie to cap the offence. Ryrie, Brown and Glen Hall all had two-hit games, while Dan Clark went 3-4 at the dish. The Selects look to return to .500 when they meet the Predators Wednesday night.

selects' tourney comes to an end
Under-23 Provincial Elimination Tournament
Fresh from the high of their exhilirating upset, the Selects faced a hard comedown as they learned an improbable eight-game run was not to be. After Kevin Ryrie singled and moved to second on a Mike Brown sacrifice, the Selects were unable to cash the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 1st and things went downhill fast. Showing signs of fatigue in his third consecutive start, Scott Clark surrendered a pair of monstrous home runs in the top of the 2nd and Owen Sound never looked back, notching a 10-0 win to bounce the Selects from the tourney. Nonetheless, entering the weekend as an unheralded young squad with a collective three years of OASA Jr. tournament experience, the Selects were proud of their performance and hope to build on it next year with another entry. Special thanks go to Rob MacDonald, Chad MacQueen and Adam Northern for joining the boys for a great weekend of ball. Mike Brown, Scott Clark and Mike Kitchen will now concentrate on men's ball, having burned their final year of junior men's eligibility.
Game MVP: Mike Brown, CF

Selects upset waterloo
Under-23 Provincial Elimination Tournament
Facing elimination against Selects regular Andy McLean and his primary team, the Waterloo Twins, Kitchener appeared to be in dire straits. After a long night of liquid strategizing, the boys came to play, led by stalwart hurler Scott Clark. Clark came through with timely pitches all day to keep his young Selects squad close, allowing only two runs, both unearned, on outfield errors. After Waterloo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st, the Selects fired right back. Kevin Ryrie singled and moved to second on a Mike Brown sac bunt; he then came in to count on a throwing error to third. The game would remain deadlocked until Waterloo took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 6th and, after McLean retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning, the Selects were left with one final chance to make their made-for-TV movie come true. Rob MacDonald led off the 7th with a walk and Adam Northern followed with a single up the gut, chasing McLean from the game. After Zack Anstett worked a walk to load the bases, Reed "Diva" Laughlin did the same to tie the game. With three chances to score the winning run, coach Steve Hall turned to Clark for a suicide squeeze bunt. The pitch got past the catcher, however, and Northen scored the winning run, sending the shocked Twins from the tourney.
Game MVP: Scott Clark, P

Tough End To First Game of tourney
Under-23 Provincial Elimination Tournament
For the first time in their 10-year history, the Kitchener Selects entered a team into the under-23 provincial elimination tournament, a veritable unknown in the 16-team field. They opened the tournament against the Ponsonby Sting and looked good early. After Kevin Ryrie reached on an error and Mike Brown walked to start the game, Chad MacQueen rapped a double to the fence, scoring Ryrie for a 1-0 Selects lead. Unfortunately, the Ponsonby hurler escaped with three consecutive strikeouts to strand Brown and MacQueen in scoring position. For a long while, though, this missed opportunity didn't loom too large, as Scott Clark was throwing a gem and receiving solid defensive support. It began to unravel, however, when Ponsonby rallied for three runs with two outs after an error prolonged the inning. They added six more runs to send the Selects to the losers bracket early, for a date with one of the tourney's top seeds, the Waterloo Twins.
Game MVP: Kevin Ryrie, SS

Selects Beat Up On Wizards
The Selects won their season series with the Wizards in convincing fashion, scoring in five separate innings for a 12-2 romp. Zack Anstett moved to 2-0 on the year, throwing a complete game two-hitter while striking out five. Offensively, the stars were many. Reed Laughlin went 2-4 including a sizzling three-run homer in the 2nd inning. Kevin Ryrie went 3-4 with a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Mike Brown was 3-4 with two runs scored and two more knocked in. Steve Hall went 2-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Selects, now 5-7, hope to attain the 0.500 mark with two tough contests against Bell Cartage and the Predators next week, but not before the first-ever Jr. Selects squad heads to Toanche for the under-23 provincial elimination tournament.
Game MVP: Reed Laughlin, RF

Hitting Woes Continue in loss To Black Sox
Though the Selects scattered six baserunners over the first three innings, they were unable to cash a run as an offence that has been drier than the Sahara Desert was once again the team's undoing. Trevor Botting and Dan Fogal notched the team's only hits off Black Sox pitcher Chris Young, while Steve Hall managed two base on balls. Andy McLean threw well for the Selects in the loss. The team begins the second half of their season next Wednesday against the Wizards. Game time is 7p.m.
Game MVP: Steve Hall, 1B

Selects Squeeze Out Win
It didn't go as planned but the Selects squeezed out a victory in a tight 8-6 win over the Kolts Wednesday night. An intentional walk with one out loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6th inning but the Selects would get two quick outs to escape with the victory. Kevin Ryrie and Reed Laughlin led the way for the Selects as Ryrie went 3-4 with two RBIs and one run scored while Laughlin went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored. The Selects will look to keep the wins coming on Monday night as they get set to take on the Bulldogs at 9:00 PM.

Lack Of Pitching Sinks Selects
When Mike Brown and Trevor Botting are pitching, let's just say it's not a good day for the Selects. With all four of the team's actual pitchers unavailable Monday, Brown quickly pitched the Selects out of the game, allowing 7 runs over two innings. Botting, in his pitching debut (they didn't even let him stand on the mound in T-ball), managed to hold the Diamond Jaxx to four runs over four innings, while striking out three. Meanwhile, the Selects' offence continued to sputter as Kevin Clugston allowed only one earned run over six innings, while striking out 10. The Selects' first run came in the fourth inning, when Glen Hall singled home Brown, who had walked. They added a second run in the sixth when Steve Hall scored on a throwing error. Andre Furlong made his KFL and fastball debut in his first appearance on the diamond since T-ball, providing strong defence and a badass fro in right field. The Selects look to return to the win column Wednesday against the Kolts.
MVP: Trevor Botting, 3B/P

Bats fall silent to buckley & REds
Kevin Buckley once again proved to be kryptonite to the Selects' bats. The young Reds pitcher tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout to beat the Selects 8-0 and deprive them of their first taste of the 0.500 mark all year. The lone blemishes came in the fifth inning, when Doug Hoffman hit a double to the warning track and Scott Clark worked a walk. Otherwise, Buckley was lights out, striking out 11 in the win. Despite the lacklustre offence, Hoffman kept the Selects close until the fifth inning, when the Reds put up a four-run inning to open an insurmountable 5-0 lead. Next up for the Selects is a rematch with the expansion Diamond Jaxx, who edged them 5-4 in the season opener.
Game MVP: Glen Hall, C

Anstet Strikes Out Nine In First Career Start
Zack Anstett picked up a win in his first ever KFL start, throwing six strong innings allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out nine. The Selects offence erupted in the fourth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and cashing eight runs. Steve Hall bookended the inning's outburst with an RBI triple and an RBI double, both cashing Kevin Ryrie. Other highlights included an RBI double off the bat of Dan Clark and a two-run single from Trevor Botting. The big inning would be all the Selects needed, handing the expansion Wizards an 8-3 loss. Rohan Thompson looked good in his first-ever KFL at-bat, working a walk. The Selects now turn their attention to Wednesday's clash with the undefeated Reds.
Game MVP: Steve Hall, 1B

sELECTS FALL 3-2 TO RIVAL SMOKE
It was all going so well. After stranding runners at third in each of the first two innings, the Selects struck for two in the third when bases loaded walks to Glen Hall and Andy McLean cashed Mike Brown and Steve Hall, who had both singled. But the three men left on base that inning, and the nine throughout the game, would come back to haunt the Selects. Their 2-0 lead held up through five innings, with Doug Hoffman rolling through the Smoke lineup. But the Smoke managed three runs in the sixth to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as Casey Halstead closed the door to preserve a tight victory.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Bell Cartage annihilates Selects
The Selects' once-potent offence has officially fallen silent. Dan Fogal and Andy McLean registered the only two hits as the Selects were trounced 14-0 by Bell Cartage. Mel Ross was a one-man wrecking crew, striking out 16 in 6 innings of work and going 3-3 with a walk and a home run offensively, just for good measure. From the Selects perspective, it was ugly. Move on. Next up, the Selects renew their acquaintance with the Classics after last week's 8-7 win, looking to return to 0.500.
Game MVP: Mike Brown, CF

Hoffman shines in gritty win
Simply stated, Doug Hoffman stole one for the Selects last night. In frigid tempatures, Hoffman threw a complete game, allowing only one unearned run while striking out 10. He also drew a one-out walk to spark the Selects economical three-run fifth inning. Down 1-0, the Selects managed to chase Kings' starter Nick Laurette from the game in spite of the fact he allowed only one hit, a weak dribbler down third base from Mike Brown that cashed Scott Clark. RBI walks from Brad Cleasby and Kevin Ryrie scored Rohan Thompson (pinch-running for Hoffman in his first game as a Select) and Trevor Botting respectively, and Hoffman shut the door the rest of the way to lock up a 3-1 win. With back-to-back victories to their credit, the Selects turn their attention to a second-place Bell Cartage team that has won four in a row. Game time Thursday is 9 p.m.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman, P

Selects get revenge in comeback win over classics
The Selects picked up their first win of the season and simultaneously exacted a measure of revenge for last year's semi-final loss to the veteran Classics, with a gritty come-from-behind 8-7 victory. Dan Clark kept the Selects within striking distance, scoring in the 1st and 3rd, but the Classics led 5-2 after three innings. The Selects tied it up in the 4th, however, when Reed Laughlin scored on Mike Brown's RBI triple, Brown stole home on a passed ball, and Clark doubled home Kevin Ryrie. Adversity again presented itself, as the Classics regained the lead with 2 runs in the 5th, but the Selects were not to be denied. With one out in their final at-bat, they loaded the bases with three straight singles from Brown, Ryrie and Clark. Dan Fogal battled from an 0-2 count to draw an RBI walk, and Glen Hall knocked home Ryrie and Clark with a walk-off single, for the 8-7 win. Scott Clark was solid at 2nd base in his first game of the year, and Andy McLean pitched well in his first game as a Select, though Doug Hoffman picked up the win in relief.
Game MVP: Dan Clark, C/LF

bat-around FIRST INNING NOT ENOUGH to secure a win
The Selects jumped to a 5-0 lead after a bat-around first inning. Steve Hall singled home Dan Clark and Reed Laughlin followed with an RBI single to cash Glen Hall. Then, Doug Hoffman hit a monster 3-run homer to score both Steve Hall and Laughlin. And then the wheels fell off. For the second straight contest, the Selects defense let them down, as error-filled defense and strong hitting from the Predators allowed them to put up 2 in the 2nd, 4 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th to take an 11-5 lead. Dan Clark singled home Hoffman to make it 11-6 in the 6th before the Predators shut the door to earn their first win of the season. The few bright spots for the Selects included Hoffman, who went 2-2 with a walk, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored, and Zack Anstett, who registered his first two hits as a Select, going 2-3 and pitching 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief. The Selects will look to better their defensive prowess Thursday night against the Classics.
Game MVP: Doug Hoffman

Defensive miscues cost selects in season opener
The Selects could not overcome a disastrous first inning defensively in their season opener, despite scratching out two runs apiece in the 2nd and 6th innings as they fell 5-4 in the first game of the season. The Diamond Jaxx scored four runs in a three-error opening inning, punctuated by a home run from right fielder Bob Crickmore. The Selects came back with two in the 2nd, when Mike Brown reached on a throwing error, cashing Doug Hoffman and Kevin Ryrie. The Diamond Jaxx made it 5-2 in the 4th, courtesy of a leadoff triple from Kevin Shaver. That would be enough despite a two-run rally from the Selects in the top of the 6th. Ryrie scored on a hot shot down the third base line off the bat of Brown, who then came around on Dan Clark's RBI single. The Selects threatened often, stranding nine runners through six innings. Steve Hall had a strong game offensively, with a single, double and base on balls in three plate appearances. Hoffman pitched 5 solid innings, striking out 7.
Game MVP: Glen Hall, C

Rain Postpones Start To Season
It wasn't the night the Selects were looking for as rain fall throughout the day caused the closure of the fields at Budd Park and pushed the start of the season back one night. The Selects will now begin the season Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Budd 2 against the Diamond Jaxx.
