SELECT A SEASON

Selects Humbled As OCC Hosts

New Dundee, Ontario

Sunday, September 18, 2025

As the hosts for the 2011 Laverne Reichert Memorial Ontario Challenge Cup, the Selects started strong, winning their Friday night opener before posting back-to-back ugly losses to get eliminated.

In a first round match-up with Orillia, the Selects jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the first when Kevin Ryrie doubled home Mike Brown and Jamie Hickling cashed Glen Hall. They then put the game out of reach in the fourth. Tim Coverdale stroked a leadoff single and came in to score when Jason Clayfield ripped a triple to the fence in straightaway centre. Mike Welton followed with an RBI single, plating Clayfield, before both Doug Hoffman and Scott Clark drew walks to load the bases. Reed Laughlin, running for Hoffman, and Clark would both score on a fielder's choice from Brown to give the Selects a 6-0 lead. Orillia managed an unearned run in the fifth, but the Selects won 6-1. Hoffman allowed just three walks and one hit, while striking out 14.

The rest of the weekend did not go quite so swimmingly. On Saturday morning, the Selects were no-hit by Dustin Veenhoff in a 7-0 loss to the Wiarton Nationals in which five of the runs were unearned. And it only got worse. Dan Martin threw a perfect game to bounce the boys in green from the tourney in a dreadful 10-0 loss to the Elmira Expos that again saw five unearned runs against.

Congratulations to the Wiarton Nationals, who went on to win the tournament, defeating the Wellington Sox in Sunday's final to earn a paid berth to the 2012 ISC worlds in Midland, Michigan.

SELECTS WIN 40TH ANNUAL BRUSSELS INVITATIONAL

Brussels, Ontario

Sunday, July 24, 2025

The Selects won their first tournament in six years over the weekend, outscoring their opponents 19-6 in the 40th Annual Brussels Invitational tournament. Kitchener opened the weekend with a 6-2 win over the Belmore Stingers, and followed that up with a convincing 7-0 victory over the Melbourne Mercs. After receiving a bye to the championship game, the Selects built up a 5-0 lead against Harwood Corners and held on for a 6-4 win.

Doug Hoffman threw three excellent games, including a five-inning no-hitter against Melbourne, allowing the Selects' shorthanded 10-man roster to preserve its energy. Hoffman's teammates supplied the necessary offensive support with a strong team effort throughout the weekend.

Glen Hall led the offense, hitting 6-10 with a double, a hit-by-pitch, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored, while Brussels' own Jamie Hickling thrived in his hometown, going 4-10 with 2 doubles, a hit-by-pitch, a walk, 4 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Kevin Ryrie added 2 RBIs and 4 runs, while Mike Brown had an RBI and 4 runs. Mike Welton and Scott Clark each put up 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Including league games, the Selects have now strung together eight consecutive wins and will look to carry that momentum through the rest of their KFL season and into the Ontario Challenge Cup in September.

Selects Outclassed In Springfield

Springfield, Ontario

Sunday, June 19, 2025

The Selects knew they'd have to bring their A game to compete with a field of the province's elite in their second tournament of 2011, the 12-team ISC world qualifier held in Springfield, ON. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

The Selects dropped their Friday night opener to the Sweaburg Crush, 7-0, thanks to defensive errors, a couple of Crush home runs, and a cadre of dormant sticks. Bryan Belisle, Mike Brown and Casey Toews notched the only Selects hits, all singles, in a forgettable loss.

Sadly, Saturday's fortunes were not much better, as the boys in green lost an elimination game to the Toronto Gators, 10-2. The two Selects runs came in the bottom of the fifth when back-to-back singles from Brown and Toews cashed Kevin Ryrie and Brad Cleasby.

Thanks to Belisle, Toews, and Rod Fevreau for rounding out the Selects' roster for the weekend. And congrats to the KW Cubs, Shakespeare Falcons, and Alvinston Indians, who all qualified for this year's world tournament in Quad Cities.

Selects Take Two of Four In Woodstock

Woodstock, Ontario

Monday, May 23, 2025

The Selects rode strong pitching to a 2-1 round robin finish in their first tournament of the season, notching impressive victories over the Springfield Brewers, 5-2, and the Hickson Reds, 5-3, after opening the weekend with a 9-1 loss to the weekend's eventual winners, the Shakespeare Falcons. The finish earned them the sixth seed in the 14-team field and a B side semi-final match-up with the Fischerville A's. Unfortunately, the Selects' defense was atypically porous on Monday morning, allowing five runs in a forgettable first inning, en route to an eventual 5-2 loss.

Steve Gillis led the Selects' offense for the weekend, hitting 0.385 with 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Brent Furtney also had a solid weekend, hitting 0.333 with 2 RBIs. Glen Hall added 4 runs scored, while Mike Brown had 3. Dan Clark knocked in three runs, and Jamie Hickling added a pair of RBIs.

On the mound, Scott Clark picked up both Selects' wins, allowing just three runs over 11 innings against tough Hickson and Springfield lineups. Doug Hoffman picked up saves in both games.

Thanks to Gillis and Tim Coverdale for donning Selects' green for the weekend.
